Flex cable in smartphone and tablet repair

Looking for spare parts for a smartphone or tablet in our Online shop you often come across the term "flex cable". This is often mentioned in the description of small parts, but also displays or batteries. In this article, you will learn what exactly a flex cable is and how to handle it when repairing a smartphone or tablet.

What is a flex cable?

The term flex cable is an abbreviation for flexible cable. It refers to electronic cables that are designed to withstand tight bends and heavy loads. As a result, these cables can be better used in complex constructions and have a longer life expectancy.

FFC

In smartphones and tablets, however, normal flex cables are not used. Instead, so-called FFC are used. FFC stands for flexible flat cables. Translated into German, this means flat, flexible cables. The only difference to normal flex cables is the shape. FFC is characterised by its flat and wide shape, while normal flex cables are round. The advantage of FFC is that less space is needed for them and they can therefore be perfectly integrated into small electronic devices.

Connecting the flex cable during smartphone or tablet repair

The flex cables are used inside a smartphone or tablet to connect the electronic parts. Many small parts are already directly mounted with a flex cable and also a Display or Battery normally already has a flex cable fitted. This is connected to the motherboard when installing a spare part. Connecting a flex cable is usually a simple matter. Most smartphones and tablets have a socket attached to the flex cable and the corresponding connection, with which the flex cable can simply be "plugged in".
